So it is a MUST to put rebar in every other hole, and every row of block horizontally? BigRedKoi i noticed you did every 4 feet or so right? Is that ok to do on the verticles? Whick quickcrete do I use for this wall? do I then use mortar for the flagstone edging? And I am not even done digging yet, still alot of dirt to move. What sucks is that one load didnt even put a dent in the piles of dirt. I hauled one load today in my Dodge ram 1500 and just level to my 6 foot bed made the springs really low = ), not to mention it took like 2 hours just to do one load, and driving to the dump. So i read somewhere that handmixing concrete and adding dirt in the mix is ok? if this is so what is the ratio of dirt to mix, reason I ask is because, I am really just looking at ways of using some of the dirt that I got from the hole, and it will save my back from having to haul it all away. Some have done dry stacking and used a product called Surface Bonding Cement as the means of providing the structural value of the mortar. For setting the block, if you are going to use normal masonry construction practices, then you would use the mortar mix. The larger the gravel, the less cement is needed to make a workable concrete of given strength. Unless you are trying to build a driveway on the cheap, I wouldn't spend too much time looking at soil cement.įor the footing and for filling the cores of the block, you need to use the concrete mix, which has gravel in it. It is not as well controlled for strength and durability, and definitely not as placement friendly as regular concrete, so it is not used for any structural applications. This is then compacted and allowed to cure just like concrete. It is a mixture of about 6% pure portland cement, not premixed concrete, mixed into the soil with a mixer called a Seeman Mixer, which is like a large tiller. And I believe a yard of concrete will fill approx 100 eight inch blocks.Īs for mixing with soil, there is a product used for highway pavement base construction called soil cement. It takes like 41, eighty lb bags if I remember correctly of quick crete to make a yrd of concrete. ![]() How much is concrete per yard in california? Here it is like 70 bucks per yard and you have to order 5 yds to not pay a haul bill. I just hand mixed concret and fill the cells of blocks walls that are 7' high and 20' long, myself, in about 4 hours. A short load for a concrete truck will run you at least $600.00. It will be a lot less expensive to hand mix and fill the cider block with concrete than order a truck. One the bender board is set level you will have no issues. What we do to make sure the footing is level is to install some bender board, as a form, on the inside edges of the trench for the footings. You need to fill all of the cells with concrete. The rebar for the b lock wall should be set with a piece on every layer horizontally and one verticla in every other cell. You should also have your vertical rebar set, and tied to the footing rebar, that you will use for the block wall. going around the perimeter and more pcs perpendicular to those a 12" centers. 95 cents a piece plus taxĬement, quickcrete 2.85 a bag and not sure which one to use with cinderblocks or to do footer?Ī standard footing, if you engineer it, would be 18" x 18" by the length of the pond perimeter. ![]() Please any suggestions would help a newbieĬinder block seconds. What is the best way DIY of making sure a footer is level? ![]() ![]() I have ALOT of dirt since i dug this and still have about 2 feet to down to finish it to 5 feet, how deep would you go if pond is five feet deep, to put footer. then a horizontal row of rebar on top layer too, to tie all together and add to strength. My original plan was to have all 4 walls cinder blocked in with a reinforced footer of course, and put rebar vertically in every other hole of the block then fill everyother( one with rebar) in with cement. What other routes can i take to save my self money? It takes forever to use a shovel to dig here, ask Kent = ). I have really hard, alot of caliche in Vegas. I have some knowledge on building walls with the cinder block, But my question is that my pond will be 4 feet in the ground sloped to a 5 foot depth to the bottom drain. So I have been reading, and reading, and reading, and you get the point.
